The Dover Quartet makes their regional debut with a packed evening of Beethoven string quartets! Featuring Seattle-native cellist Camden Shaw, the Quartet catapulted to international fame after sweeping the 2013 Banff Competition. They have risen to become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world, and Emerald City Music is hosting their Seattle/Olympia debut this weekend.

All SAM members are invited to preview Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style before it opens to the public on October 11. Please note: during Member Preview Weekend, tickets to view the exhibition are timed for entry.
Sat Oct 8, 2–3 pm: Yves Saint Laurent Member Preview With Hamish Bowles And Florence Müller
Join us for a special conversation on Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style between Hamish Bowles—International Editor-At-Large for Vogue and a noted fashion collector—and fashion historian and guest curator Florence Müller, moderated by co-curator and SAM’s Deputy Director for Art Chiyo Ishikawa. These two renowned fashion experts will discuss the legacy of Yves Saint Laurent, his influence on contemporary designers, and collecting fashion.

From royalty to everyday people, what we wear defines who we are in the minds of ourselves and other people. The featured artists in this show present work based on garments, frocks, costumes, and vestments. Opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 13, 6-7:30 pm.

Visit SAM during Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style, for a look into Saint Laurent's creative process with free drop-in drawing sessions led by fashion illustration instructor Lori Meyer.
Thu Oct 13, 5–7 pm: Yves Saint Laurent Educator Preview
SAM honors educators during the opening week of the exhibition with a free, exclusive Educator Preview. K–12 educators will enjoy an evening with peers, receive free classroom resources, and get creative with hands-on activities. Admission to the exhibition and SAM galleries is included. RSVP requested.
Sat Oct 22, 1–3 pm: The Art of Clothing in French Society
This workshop, presented in partnership with the Alliance Française de Seattle, explores clothing as an extension of the body and as an object of study in both sociocultural anthropology and art history. Tell me what you wear, and I will tell you who you are.
Wed Oct 26, Nov 9, Nov 30: SAM Films: Yves Saint Laurent Selects
As he grew up, Yves Saint Laurent’s personal and professional sensibilities were shaped by the art of film. SAM and Alliance Française de Seattle present two of Saint Laurent’s favorites, each a model of refined beauty and compelling romance: Les Enfants du Paradis(Children of Paradise, Marcel Carne, 1945) and La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast, Jean Cocteau, 1946). And we screen a remarkable film for which Saint Laurent designed the costumes: Belle de Jour, starring Catherine Deneuve (Luis Bunuel, 1967). All films on 35mm and in French with English subtitles.
Sat Oct 29, 2–5 pm: SAM Creates: The Art of Fashion with Mark Mitchell
Artist, educator, and designer Mark Mitchell teaches an in-depth workshop on the art of fashion. Participants will learn the stitching techniques that Mitchell uses in his creative practice which are also used to construct the garments on view in Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style.
Wed Nov 2, 7–8 pm: Fashioning Roles of Diversity with Bethann Hardison
Supermodel and diversity advocate Bethann Hardison joins SAM's Deputy Director for Art Chiyo Ishikawa for a discussion on the changing roles of racial diversity in the fashion industry in conjunction with the exhibition. Hardison and Ishikawa will discuss Yves Saint Laurent's role in bringing awareness to the representation of people of color within the industry and how the same issues pervade contemporary society.

Sat Nov 5, 8–11 pm: Legendary Children
Join us for a night of the beautiful, the transgressive, and the unique as we celebrate QTPOC (Queer & Trans People of Color) communities. Featuring performances, DJs, and art from some of Seattle’s most talented queer artists, you’ll have the chance to join in community conversations sparked by queer and transgender communities of color and the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition.
Sat Nov 5, 10 am–4 pm: Fashion and Identity: Fall Educator Workshop
How does fashion allow individuals to conceal or reveal elements of their personal identities? Taking inspiration from the exhibition Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style and works from SAM’s collection, we’ll examine how fashion can enable the wearer to conform to—or rebel against—societal expectations of gender and class. Open to K-12 educators of all types, and six (6) Washington State Clock Hours.
Sat Nov 12, 10 am–3 pm: Family Festival
Spend the day exploring our new exhibition, Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style, with a full day of live performances, music, art making, and tours inspired by the exhibition. Grab the family and friends—the whole community is invited. Free and open to the public, RSVP requested. All ages.
Fri Nov 18, 8 pm–midnight: SAM Remix
#SAMRemix returns for an evening of performances, tours, dancing, creating, and exploring SAM's collection and special exhibitions. Choose your own adventure during this creative late-night out inspired by Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style.
Sat Nov 19, 1–3:30 pm: Art Beyond Sight Tour: Yves Saint Laurent
The Art Beyond Sight program provides monthly tours focused on verbal description of the museum’s collection and exhibitions to visitors with low or no vision.

The Seattle Art Museum is opening its doors for Member Tuesday—open exclusively to members!
Fri Dec 2, 7–10 pm: Teen Night Out
For high school-age teens only, this not-to-be-missed evening is inspired by the exhibition Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Styleand showcases creativity and complex cultures alongside incredible DJs, teen art tours, and art-making workshops led by Seattle’s hottest contemporary artists.
Wed Dec 7, 7–9 pm: The Perfection of Style Fashion Show
Taking inspiration from Saint Laurent’s creative process, local designers will create a look based on a work on view in SAM’s permanent collection as well as showcase other original designs at this fashion show. Designers TBA.
Sat Dec 10, 10 am–noon: Family Fun Workshop
Explore creative sketches and bold designs with a family-friendly tour of Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style. Each workshop begins with a sketching tour in the galleries. With the guidance of a teaching artist and a wealth of art-making materials, harness your imagination to create a masterpiece inspired by your art adventure! Designed for children ages 5–12 and their caregivers.
Yves Saint Laurent-Inspired Fashion Design Competition
This summer, fashion students and recent graduates were invited to create an original look inspired by fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent and SAM’s fall exhibition. Beginning October 11, the best three looks will be displayed in the museum’s Brotman Forum for the duration of the exhibition.
Barbie® Celebrates Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style
In celebration of the Seattle Art Museum’s Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style exhibition and as part of their sponsorship support, Barbie® has meticulously created three one-of-a-kind dolls that feature iconic Saint Laurent looks. The dolls will be on view for free in the museum’s Sarkowsky Hall in the north entrance near Union. These dolls were designed in partnership with the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, and the original garments are featured in The Perfection of Style, now on view in the special exhibition galleries.
Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style Exhibition Catalogue
A stunning 160-page exhibition catalogue (including 150 color photographs) published by Skira Rizzoli will be available for purchase in SAM Shop ($45.00 hardcover, $39.95 softcover). Also titled Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style (ISBN: 978-0-8478-4942-0), it is edited by Florence Müller and Chiyo Ishikawa. It features a preface by Pierre Bergé, President of the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, and a foreword by Kimerly Rorschach, SAM’s Illsley Ball Nordstrom Director and CEO.
