Up The Jewelry Game with Rocksbox

I am not good at buying jewelry. I get so overwhelmed at jewelry store counters and my eyes never seem to settle on just one thing. Almost all of my jewelry is either vintage or sentimental; bracelets bought from market vendors on past trips, or pieces gifted to me. With all of the "box of the month" models out there, I looked forward to trying out Rocksbox, the jewelry box you rotate through at your convenience.

How does Rocksbox work, you ask? It's simple, really:

  1. Sign up at Rocksbox.com (use my codes jessbff4 or jessxoxo2!)
  2. Take the style survey
  3. For $19/month, get a new set of jewelry selected by Rocksbox exclusively for you.
  4. Send the jewelry (or buy what you like and send the rest) back whenever you're ready!

Rocksbox don't play, neither. They don't stock just any run-of-the-mill no-name brands. Oh no. I'm talkin' House of Harlow, Vanessa Mooney, Wanderlust & Co., Gorjana, CC Skye & more. I've only had two Rocksboxes so far, and they are so fresh I'm having a hard time returning them!

Slate spiked necklace & Wanderlust & Co. ring

They even tuck little presents into your Rocksbox from time to time. Here's the necklace I got for the holidays:

So cute, right? These are pieces I would've never picked up on my own, yet they've melted seamlessly into my everyday rotation. I'm looking forward to more icey joy in my Rocksboxes of the future!

Fresh Ride: Lexus RX 450h

I was given the opportunity to drive the 2015 Lexus RX 450h a couple of weeks ago, and the two of us got comfortable right away. I toted that whip around the city, into the woods and back!

It's funny how a simple test drive can get you out of your comfort zone. As a city dweller, I probably never would find myself behind the wheel of an SUV otherwise - too big, nowhere to park it, etc. I wasn't sure I'd be into it, but was pleasantly surprised by how easily I could acclimate it to city life, and by all the little details that make it a standout drive.

It's really all about the little details with vehicles nowadays. Lexus always goes above and beyond the call of duty to create a luxury experience, and the latest RX is no different. I actually thought it had less gadgets and touch screen options than other types of cars - and I appreciated that. There's so much to look at, touch, talk to and otherwise be distracted by on the dashboards of new makes and models. Why not focus on making the actual driving experience an amazing one?

For an SUV, the Lexus RX is super quiet and drives so, so smoothly. Its hybrid engine purrs like a ninja cat, yet still has the horsepower you'd want and expect. Quiet horsepower was such a nice change from my normal ride (an '08 Civic hybrid!)

Post-Super Bowl Thoughts, From a Seahawks Fan

Sigh.

Like most of America, you are probably going about your night after watching Super Bowl 49, and you probably saw the Seahawks lose to the Patriots off of a baffling final play call. Ugh, it hurts. What a heartbreaker. I've been going through all the stages of grief and back again since the end of the game. I couldn't wait to get home so I could cry in the shower. We watched the game at my aunt's place about 45 minutes outside of Seattle, and the ride home was all the more excruciating with traffic. Even the traffic felt somber, confused and angry!

I thought for sure I'd be ugly crying it out when I got home. I did have one good ugly cry, but enough travel time had passed for me to absorb some of the players' tweets and sound bites from coach Pete Carroll's post-game interview. I feel like the Seahawks are handling this better than I am! My shower tears were sad for a minute, then for some reason, I just started smiling and laughing to myself.

Maybe I'm delirious from shell-shock. I don't know. I just started thinking about what an incredible season this was and I can't help but be happy and grateful. We have a classy team full of stand-up guys who love and respect each other, and we have every reason to be so proud of each and every one of them.

I've spent almost every Sunday (and the occasional Monday, Thursday and Saturday) watching these boys and live tweeting my emotions with an inimitable community of fellow 12s.

Tweeting with fellow Seahawks fans is probably my favorite reason for being on Twitter nowadays!

The magic we've all felt in the city the last couple of weeks is palpable, and it's something special to be able to feel part of your community in this way. The Seahawks have brought the fun and the swag to civic pride for sure, and I couldn't be more proud to be a fan and a Seattleite. What are we going to do for the next few months?

I love this team so much.

They remind me to push myself every day - 1-0 Championship mindset every day. They remind me to always be classy and graceful, even when trolls try to prod and argue with you on social media. They remind me to 'love your brothers' - your team, your family, your people. They remind me to be loyal. They remind me to rise above all the negative noise. They remind me that humility in your confidence is crucial. They remind me to always stick to my guns. I normally look up to women in various fields, but this team stays with me; grows with me as they grow themselves.

I'm so excited for what's to come in the future. The Seahawks are a young team, and we are just getting started!

I LOVE YOU FELLOW 12s!!! THANKS ALL FOR AN AWESOME SEASON!

I'm looking forward to chatting all offseason and sharing our agony as we wait for next season to start :)

Thoughts From a Seahawks Fan on Super Bowl Eve

Y'all. I have not been able to concentrate all week. Unless you're something Seahawks-related, I'm not really f'ing with you this week. I'm sorry. My focus is failing me.

Does this team even understand what it's done to this city?

The energy on the streets is different this week. Everyone is smiling, high-fiving strangers, starting random SEA! HAWKS! chants, doling out thumbs up & nods of approval at one another's Seahawks attire. The city is alive, and blue and green is coursing through its veins. The undeniable adrenaline is what's making it so damn hard to do anything else.

This season was a roller coaster. Nobody expected the Seahawks to make it back to the Super Bowl except for the 12s. Why would they? Nobody's ever done that before. That seems to be the outdated and horribly out-of-touch M.O. of a league that doesn't seem ready for a team like the Seahawks to be so dominant. Too young. Too short. Too inexperienced. "F" grade. Fifth-round picks. Too mouthy. Not mouthy enough. Not black enough. Even for a team that proved themselves by going all the way last year, the league doesn't seem to want the Seahawks to succeed. The national media announcers' commentary through every game will tell you everything they think about the Seahawks in so many words.

If they don't support our team, we'll just have to support them more.

Not that it's hard to. These guys are so damn easy to love. Uncle Pete (Carroll) runs the kind of ship any Seattleite can get behind: be yourself, work hard, keep things positive, and love your teammates. The national media stay trying to call them thugs for talking too much or not talking enough, but we know better. Their philanthropic efforts are bountiful and genuine; they love their team but they also love and support their communities, here and in their hometowns. They're just good dudes the whole city can be proud of.

And goddamn can they play some football!

I normally keep things all positive here, but I have to say, I feel sorry for all the candy that isn't Skittles. I wonder what those sales look like this week, especially here. I feel sorry for the people calling any 12th fan a 'bandwagoner' - for every one of those, there are at least a dozen more who'll happily give you a high-five for that blue and green. Why be that unhappy or worked up over someone else's happiness anyway? I feel sorry for Troy Aikman, Joe Buck & every commentator who loves picking against the Seahawks at all times. I feel sorry for non-Seahawks fans living in Seattle. I feel sorry for any non-football fan following me on Twitter. I feel sorry and send good vibes to anyone using the "Anyone but Seattle" phrase or hashtag. I need you to know that this energy and excitement is all love, and if your team were in the Super Bowl, I'd hope you'd feel just as high.

You need to watch this. Marshawn is a national treasure.

I am so grateful to to be a Seattleite and a Seahawks fan. I'm so excited for tomorrow I can hardly stand it. GO HAWKS!!!

Evening Magazine: Super Bowl XLIX Seahawks Style w/Fresh Jess 2015

Remember last year when Kim Holcomb & Evening Magazine were kind enough to have me on the show for a Seahawks style segment? Well, in between tears of joy and disbelief following this year's NFC Championship game, Kim and I coordinated to do another style segment this year. Here it is!

Article with links and full text here

It's still surreal to be on a show I've watched since I was a baby, in this beautiful city where we've put in many years of misery and no hope of coming close to the Super Bowl, to talk about my own way of sharing the pride I feel for our boys going to defend their championship title. The magic is alive in the Emerald City and it's in the hearts, smiles and blue & green sleeves of all the 12s out there.

I'm not sure how I'm focusing on anything else this week. Is it the Super Bowl yet?

SEA! HAWKS!

Thank you endlessly, Kim, Howard & the Evening Magazine team for having me again!

To LIVEsimple & SELF's Time Makeover

A big reason I've made this my year to simplify is to create space in my life for the things that are most important to me. It's crazy how many distractions can get in the way of your priorities! It's ridiculous really, and I'm tired of it. This is not the year for grandiose declarations of a 'new year, new me.' This is the year to finally take a good, hard look at what I'm doing every day and carve out the time to balance the things I need to do with the things I want to do.

As part of the SELF Magazine Collective, I'm taking part in their 21-day Time Makeover, and I encourage all of you to do the same! Just take the quiz on this page, and if you're so inclined, sign up for 21 days of tips, challenges and other offerings to help you improve how you manage your time. I am never one to turn down help when needed, and I'm enjoying the daily prompts and inspiration so far. It's only 21 days into the new year and I've made a lot of strides in clearing up my time and space already!

If you're in Seattle tonight, I'll be chatting more about living simply at CRAVEFuel's January event! Come and join us!

More details here.

I'll be blogging all year about living simply. Hope you'll follow me along on this journey!

MLK Day: On Service, Selma & Seahawks

Wow. What a Sunday! I started doing a blog audit of my old posts during the NFC Championship game today (to calm my nerves before the Seahawks' incredible, unreal win.) While I waited for my heart rate to calm down, I took a trip down memory lane, reading posts I wrote in 2008 & 2009. Holy shit. There's a lot that spoke out to me during this reminiscing, but what rang loud and clear is how much I miss that editorial voice I had when I first started my blog. I sounded so free. My spirit was free, back then, to say whatever TF I wanted because I didn't know if anyone was reading this anyway! I want to get back to that. I will get back to that. To write as if I'm free again.

Free at last, if you will. See what I did there? :P

If you're not partaking in a Day of Service on this Martin Luther King, Jr. observance day (and maybe even after your service!), you should make time to go see Selma. Regardless of what those ignorant Oscar voters can't seem to see, Selma is a masterpiece and if it doesn't leave you with all the thoughts and all the feels - then I don't know if we can be friends.

And some more background on the movie, via:

Selma

The Daily Beast: The Revolutionary Women of 'Selma'

It's crazy to think that the events portrayed in Selma happened not too long ago. Perhaps even crazier, that much of that ignorance that inspired non-violent protests are still happening today. We still have a lot of work to do.

Fresh Reads: The Woman I Wanted to Be by Diane von Furstenberg

Most of my books are non-fiction, usually written by an entrepreneur I admire in some way. Every single one of these entrepreneurs has worked hard to achieve their dreams, and yet every one of them is vastly different from the next. Like every girl, I've admired Diane von Furstenberg for her style, charisma and that iconic wrap dress. To be honest, I didn't know much about her until I picked up The Woman I Wanted to Be, her latest book. Little did I know what an introspective look I'd get into the life of a real-life princess!

This is probably the first book that caught me uttering the words, "Girl, you have a charmed life." But that's only the half of it! In The Woman I Wanted to Be, Diane takes us through her life from four different lens: family, love, beauty and fashion. Naturally, the fashion part is a lion's share of her story, but you really understand how the soul inside the lady and the business have evolved together throughout the entire book.

You can't help but wish you were a part of Diane's inner circle as you read through the book. She speaks so fondly of everyone who's touched her life in some way, no matter how far back they go and whether or not she sees them anymore. Her fierce love for her family translates deeply into her business - and stems from the well of fierce love she's cultivated for herself through the years.

What was my favorite lesson learned from Diane? I loved how she's owned every part of her life. Daughter. Mother. Sister. Cancer survivor. Inexperienced but wildly passionate entrepreneur. Jetsetter. Lover. Comeback kid. She repeats the message of 'becoming the woman I wanted to be' throughout the book, as well as her mantra, "Love is life." No matter how dark or bright her life might be, Diane knows love is the motivating factor in everything, and her journey of loving and finding herself has made for one truly enchanting life.

Happy New Year! My 2015 Resolutions

Happy new year! Hope you had a fun night full of laughter and loved ones!

Now that my theme is set, goals mapped and vision board made, I thought I'd share some of my own resolutions. Some of these I carry with me from year to year. Others are testaments to my theme of simplifying. Still others speak to my goals of being more organized as well as being more connected - but in the old-school, offline, "Hey, I was thinking of you" kinda way.

Like to hear it? Here it goes:

  • Work out every day
  • Drink 2-3L of water every day
  • Drink a green smoothie every day
  • Write & send one thank you card a week. I've already gotten a head start on this and I know it'll be more like 'at least' one a week!
  • Tell people how I feel about them. If I've been thinking about them. How I'm grateful for them. Being straight up when they ask for honesty.
  • Respond to five emails in all of my inboxes every day. I am awful at getting through emails - for this blog, mostly - but in my quest to be better at saying 'no' to the wrong things and 'yes' to the right, I'm adding this fuel to the fire to answer them quickly rather than letting them stew in my mind. No more mountains out of mole hills!
  • Jot down three things I'm grateful for, daily. My friend Madeline has been doing this for awhile and filled up a jar full of things she's thankful for. I think I'll keep mine in my planner.
  • Read one book a month.
  • Find the perfect black eyeliner.
  • Learn how to do a proper crow pose & handstand. I always chicken out! All in my head, right?
  • Read up on being a better conversationalist. I feel like I've regressed in this since my chamber of commerce days and I want to improve those skills again. We can all learn how to not be so awkward in conversation, right?
  • Follow more positive and uplifting people on social media. Less negative and self-deprecating.

Do you have any new year's resolutions? I'd love to hear them in a comment below!

Happy first day of 2015!

On Blogging & Life: Some Reflections on 2014

During this year's Stratejoy Holiday Council, Molly mentioned five different kinds of years. Five different parts of a cycle, if you will.

2014 was definitely a building year for me. One of growth, discomfort, hard decisions, big life changes and lots of progress. This wasn't one of those years where I caught myself saying "I'm having the best year ever!" - but that's okay. In fact, I'm seeing a meme going around on social media that says something to the effect of, "2013 was learning; 2014 was the build-up/practice; 2015 is game time!"

It's true. I feel a lot of good things are in store in 2015, and I'll be working hard to make sure that good energy manifests as much as possible. With that, here are some of my closing, random reflections on 2014:

On blogging

The state of the blogosphere is sooo different from when I started six years ago. Forgive me for sounding like an old-timer, but there's a lot of resources readily available to new bloggers that we had to work hard to pull together before. Blog design, brand sponsorships, photography best practices, social media, etc. Maybe it's just me, but the heart and soul of blogging is also different. Fashion blogging is so popular now that there are clear trends that take off and if you don't dress like a blogger, you're labeled 'edgy' and 'eccentric.'

Guess which two words have been used to describe me/Fresh Jess?

I don't mind those terms but they've made me very aware of the homogenized evolution of fashion blogging - and how I don't want any part of that. What's always drawn me to blogging and to my favorite bloggers is their personal style. The ones who push boundaries. Who parlay their blogs into something more meaningful in their lives. Whose blogs are absolutely representative of who they are, what they're into and sometimes, what they stand for. I will take one Rumi Neely, perfect in her ethereal, floaty clothes I can't pull off here in the PNW over a million girls trying to show me how to layer a sweater over my skater skirt and pull it together with a sweet floppy hat.

Blogging will have you caught up in 'needing' that latest shoe trend (hi Birkenstocks) or re-doing your blog design to match what's already out there - if you let it. Remember what's important to you, and blog about that. Be choosay (ILoveMakonnen voice) and always be yourself. That's how you stand out from the rest.

On social media

Social media has been the vehicle for building connections and opening so many doors for me. It's also become my worst distraction, and this year I hit a wall. It's way easy to get caught up in the hype of the latest trending topic, or in the energy being put out there by the people I follow (which, by nature of having the safety of hiding behind a computer screen, is negative, defensive and condescending.) This year, I caught myself stepping back often, thinking, "What the fuck is this for?"

When your co-worker is in your face telling you why this BuzzFeed article is funny as shit and your industry colleague is asking for help in spreading the word about their latest campaign, it can be hard to distinguish between a distraction and a good use of your time. While there's a lot of useful, interesting things on the internet, how much of what we are consuming is junk?

I've been thinking a lot about the idea of un-learning my dependence on the digital and re-learning what it's like...otherwise. Moving back to paper calendars and to-do lists, for example, or not bringing my phone with me everywhere I go.

My theme for 2015 is to simplify. A lot of that has to do with cutting back the noise and the clutter I consume, especially in the digital space. There might be an app/article/hashtag for that, but I don't need to use it. I'll be blogging a lot about this over the next year!

On health/fitness

Navigating my second year full-fledged in my journey of health & fitness was a lot more tumultuous than the first. A new job means a totally new schedule; a new set of responsibilities; a new group of people I spend a lot of time with; and re-familiarizing myself with non-freelancer me. Don't get me wrong; that entrepreneurial side won't die or even be stifled. It's just a new thing for me to get adjusted back to office life.

I was exhausted after work for much of the year, and though I didn't necessarily eat like shit all the time, I just wasn't on top of my nutrition game like I was last year. I guess that was my biggest vice this year; comparing myself to me the year before. I was probably more fit, stronger and ate healthier overall this year, but because my leaps and bounds weren't the first times I'd experienced them, they didn't feel as special. Going into 2015 with a renewed, positive outlook and ready to slay.

Savoring the moment with my new nephew!!!

Savoring the moment with my new nephew!!!

On life

I'll keep this short and say that my decision to make my 2015 "simplify" comes from the overwhelm I felt in social media as well as the rest of my life. I'm tired of feeling perpetually behind on email, or that I'm missing out on something I'm not sure I even want when I say 'no' to an opportunity. I have anxiety like I've never had before. I don't need to do it all, and I don't want to.

I do want to savor the moment. That message keeps resonating in me. Cut back on that clutter. Turn down the noise. Decrease my inputs of information. Carefully edit what I consume so I can stay focused on what's important.

Are you consuming without thought, or creating?

Make time to sit, think, brainstorm, create!

Slow down!

My Vision Board & Theme for 2015

Wow. This year just flew on by. I'm looking at the number of posts I've written this year & I'm on track to have the second lowest since starting Fresh Jess. I know a number's just a number, and I'm proud of all that I've written this year - but I had so much more in the pipeline that I just didn't find the time to do.

That's been my biggest struggle. Where does blogging fit into my schedule now that I've got this new job? Working out, eating right and savoring time offline are also priorities, so where does that leave Fresh Jess?

More than anything, I know I will continue blogging. This is my haven for sharing me; my life, things that inspire me, people and puppies I'm inspired by. And so here I am, fresh off the 2014 Stratejoy Holiday Council with my theme set and vision board assembled ever so carefully. I still have some goal-setting to work through, but all in all I feel really good heading into 2015 with a clear idea of what I want to do, and a map for how to do it all - including blogging!

This year's theme is 'simplify.' The struggle for 'balance' is nothing new, but this year I experienced a tipping point of sorts on my relationship with social media. I love spending time online and have made so, so many invaluable connections because of it. So many fun & witty people! So many enlightening and hilarious things to look at! So many apps!

It's also taken a toll on my life in many ways, and this year I had several moments of wanting to step away from it all. I couldn't ever do that completely given it's what I do for work, but I've committed at least this next year towards unlearning and re-learning how to live a digital native's life outside of the digital realm.

From the ways in which I organize my life to the intention I put in being present in the moment, 2015 is about simplifying my life. It's about not multi-tasking. It's about getting proper sleep and hydration. It's about savoring the moments cuddling my bulldog or my new nephew.

There'll be a lot of lessons to learn, and I'll be blogging my experiences through it all. I hope you're into it!

This year's vision board is heavy on women and words. Strong women. Affirmations and declarations. DVF, Marion, Kate, Solange, Nicki, J.Lo, Cara, Kristen and Victoria. They're recognizable, and they've shaped their lives (and the public's opinion about them) very much according to the woman each of them wants to be. Re-defining all that's feminine, sexy, powerful and impactful in their own way. I get in my own way far too often, and having this board in my closet to look at every day will remind me to simplify; to stay focused on leaving my own footprint in this world.

I'll be looking at this vision board every day; thinking of my theme every day; and revisiting my goal progress regularly.

Have you set a theme, goals or resolutions for 2015? Let me know in a comment!

Cheers to your best year yet!

On 2.5 Years of Freelancing

When I decided to start freelancing over two and a half years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into. I just knew I had to do it. Working for yourself is the most freeing job you can ever have - if you're willing to work the hardest you ever have in your life for it! It's also the one professional move you can make that will teach you more about yourself, about others and about life than anything else. The great thing about freelancing is that it's always there if you decide to do it. While I wrap up my first round of life as a freelancer, here are a few of the best - and hardest - lessons I've learned:

Image via Pinterest

Image via Pinterest

Putting yourself out there is nerve-wracking & necessary.

Working for yourself means you do everything - everything - yourself. At least when you're starting out. Of the many hats you wear, marketing yourself is one hat that's always on your head. I happen to know a bit about marketing myself - building a personal brand as a blogger and social media professional made that a necessary skill, and LinkedIn and the occasional blog/real-life comment tells me I'm pretty good at it. Still, that didn't prepare me for the nerves that come with putting yourself out there as a freelancer.

People are fascinating.

Once I got over those nerves and started telling people what I was up to, a beautiful thing happened. People responded warmly, and many were willing to help! In fact, the lion's share of my freelance work has come from word-of-mouth. People are awesome. Some people really aren't, and you encounter them when you decide to work for yourself too. People who think freelancing means you can't hold a 'real' job down. People who don't pay you for work you've done. People who change what they want out of you after the contract's been signed. People who want to have coffee or co-work with you then can't stop talking to let either of you get any work done. The awesome and the not-so-awesome have taught me to always surround yourself with good, true people. As James Altucher said, "Who you choose is more important than what you do."

You get what you give.

Sometimes we're enamored by the idea of freelancing because of its perceived benefits. You can work on your own schedule, from anywhere you want, at any time of day. You can take a break and go do something else for awhile and not have coworkers breathing down your neck wondering where you are. "Sign me up!", right? What's hard for any freelancer to convey unless you've been there yourself is that you truly work harder than you ever had in a conventional 9 - 5. It's crazy how much your perspective changes when you establish an hourly bill rate and you (or your client) want to squeeze every ounce out of every hour!

Structure is key.

Speaking of time, my perspective on my schedule and what I did with my time completely changed once I started freelancing. "Does it benefit my bottom line?" I'd ask myself when weighing what I'd do with my hours every day. Not everything directly benefits it, of course, but that mindset sure made it a lot easier to say no to things and people that aren't worth the time. I find I'm more productive when I've got some structure to my day and in what I'm doing.

It's lonely.

Working for yourself at home is great, until you realize almost all of your interaction with other human beings is through email or social media. Something I missed most when freelancing was collaborating with others on an idea or on tactics, or just brainstorming. Going to coffee shops all the time helped to feel somewhat connected, but on a short-term basis. I didn't want to set too many coffee dates when there's always work to do. So while your coworkers can get on your last nerve sometimes, don't ever take their banter for granted!

You will always know what's best for yourself.

When the balance between blogging, consulting and life became my biggest struggle, that's when I made the choice to turn the long-term contract gig I had into a permanent thing. I freelanced because I wanted to spend more time blogging, and yet I never figured out that happy medium marrying professional blogging with the consulting work I was doing. More often than not, the blogging gigs I took on were too short-term or not lucrative enough, and so my profits would come from strictly consulting. Because I'd be working a lot, I wasn't able to spend nearly as much time on the blogging side of business as I wanted to. On top of that, I discovered I really liked blogging about things that I wouldn't or couldn't necessarily charge for - and that's okay. In fact, I know you beautiful readers would rather read about things I'm passionate about; not products or services that paid to be here.

I'm officially a permanent full-timer at the non-profit gig I started on contract in May, and while I struggled with the culture shock of going back to office life (I gotta put pants on again?), it's the choice I needed to make. Freelancing is amazing and I wouldn't doubt it if it was part of my future sometime down the road. For now, giving back with purpose through work and the connections I'm cultivating with students have already made this an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I am also still able to work on and grow Fresh Jess, so I'm excited to have the mind and creative space to take things even higher from here.

Happy holidays!

The gifts just keep on comin' from Fresh Jess this holiday season!

Last month, I had the honor of hanging out with Jessica (owner) and Mady (production assistant) in the Ampersand as Apostrophe studio. I love meeting small biz owners, and what a treat to see Jess in her element. Amidst giant rolls of leather hides and shelves full of chains of all kinds, we talked bags, business and life. Ampersand as Apostrophe is one of the most coveted bag brands on ShopBop, Revolve and boutiques across the world. We're so lucky to have Jess and AasA based right here in the Emerald City!
