On creating space & treating yourself (w/a Skoah deal!)

Hey, long time no see! Tis the season for holiday chaos, and I have indeed fallen into a self-imposed "busy trap." One of my beliefs has always been to only blog when I have something thoughtful to say or share, and lately…I don't know, I just haven't been inspired enough to do so.

It's a very weird feeling for me to not want to blog. For the first time ever, I've even questioned whether or not I want to keep blogging at all. It's just one symptom of a feeling that's seeped into a lot of the other parts of my life. Feelings of discontent, unhappiness and dissatisfaction with everything I'm doing. I'm asking myself whether I'm still interested in some of the very things that have given me so much opportunity. It's left me with a lot to think about lately, and aside from my daily to-do list and holiday merriment, this is what I've been spending my time on.

Lately I feel like blowing everything up and starting completely over - my blog, who I follow on social media, what I'm doing on my consulting side. But where do I start? I'm so discontent, it's overwhelming to know where to begin - and thanks to the holidays, it's easy to put things off for later.

Something that's been very clear to me throughout all of this is that I need to create space in my life. Space to think, reconnect, create and just dream. I've worked hard this year to make lots of my dreams come to life, and now it's time for new ones (or maybe updated versions of current ones!) Creating space has also felt necessary in connections, both offline and off. From the 'friends' who take more than they give, and from the social media which has been sucking up way too much of my time, attention and energy for far too long.

Jacob and I took spent some time in southern California recently, and during that week I allowed myself that space. Instead of jam-packing my time there with work, to-dos and to-see's, I just absorbed life for a week. Some yoga, hiking and running outside, some exploring of the various beaches off of PCH - and most importantly, some time to write and brainstorm. I took myself out of that rut of only doing tactical things on my to-do list and finally put some thought and creation into my blog's media kit as well as a total redesign of the site (stay tuned!)

Our peaceful AirBnB in Huntington Beach

Our peaceful AirBnB in Huntington Beach

On the consulting tip, I've felt like I've taken on work and clients just because they've come to me, not necessarily because it's what I want to do. I also gave myself the time that week to think about how I'm articulating the services I want to do as a consultant, and the kinds of clients I want to work with. In blogging and consulting, it's hard to say no when someone clearly wants to work with you. It's a lot easier when you know what you want to do in the first place.

I've stuck to my fitness and health commitment, but have also given in to probably more than my fair share of holiday indulging and excuses. It's freezing out, and there have been a lot of parties to go to this season! I'm not totally off the wagon - my body still insists on a green smoothie every day and I try to choose super foods and other good meal choices when I'm feeling it. But I'm definitely ready for the Resolution Challenge and getting back up on my game again.

Growth and transition are exciting, but no one ever said they'd be fun and comfortable. I know this is transition time to help get me in the mind frame for what's to come, but it's unsettling to not like anything about my current status. All I know is that I have a lot of work to do, and somewhere inside is the fire to do it.

I'll be back blogging soon (there's a sponsored post going up tomorrow but was written weeks ago. That doesn't count.), and in the mean time, I'd like to share with you a little treat if you're in the Seattle area. I had the pleasure of checking out Seattle's newest spa, Skoah - which takes an interesting spin on skincare with "personal training" for your skin. I'll provide a more in-depth look at Skoah later on, but for now you can enjoy $50 off a facial if you book before Christmas Eve. That makes most of their facials just $35 out of your pocket - such a great deal! Treat yo' self :) Happy holidays!

Mourning Paul Walker.

I am supremely sad about Paul Walker's untimely passing this past Saturday. Mourning celebrities is such a weird, crazy, surreal thing. Like there's a hierarchy somewhere of how important grief should be that corresponds with how well you know a person. I didn't know Paul Walker. From what I do know, he was a truly exemplary person - someone who put as much time and effort into giving back to the world (through his non-profit, Reach Out Worldwide) and raising his family as he did to his craft and work. It's clear from observing the statements his current (Fast & Furious) and past castmates have made about him was that he was a positive force that touched lives well beyond theirs and his own. 'Angel' is a word I'm seeing most commonly describing him.

Paul Walker being awesome on behalf of Reach Out Worldwide

The biggest reason his death has touched me so much is that my mom. LOVES. Paul Walker. We've taken her to see every one of the Fast & Furious movies in the theatre (preferably IMAX :)) on opening weekend. Brian O'Conner was far & away her favorite part of the cast. It's crazy to me how the movies actually keep getting better with each subsequent one. I guess that's the mark of a truly successful franchise. They know exactly what genre and audience they resonate with, and they've grown that important connection over time. The cast will never be uttered in contention for an Oscar, but they've probably touched far more lives than any Oscar-winning film could - my wonderful mother included.

Moms & I at Fast Five opening weekend

I've always been fascinated by how Walker and the Fast & Furious franchise brought the street racing subculture to the mainstream. What we see on the silver screen is real life for so many people out there. So much so that the cast (having worked together for over 13 years on these movies) have become a family unto themselves. Brian O'Conner became Paul Walker, kinda like Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp. Paul didn't seem to mind that one bit. (source: USA Today)

This weekend I was reminded of how varying our connections to celebrities are. To other humans in general, in fact. When news broke of his awful car crash with friend and business partner Roger Rodas, I went through stages of disbelief ("Please be a hoax. Please don't be real."), worry ("My mom. How's she gonna take this news?") and shock ("I don't want to believe this is real.") Something that surprised me was how rashly I reacted to the rest of my peers on social media. As usual, there were people quick to make jokes or make light of the whole situation. "It's just Paul Walker, that lame dude from those lame car movies," they insinuated. "Who cares?" others mused. "What about the thousands of other people who've died today?" Still others argued. I did something I told myself I'd never do on social media - I reacted to all that negativity.

I was surrounded by my boyfriend, bulldog, my bestie and another one of my bests that night. It didn't take long for me to realize I shouldn't have reacted to the haters and naysayers, but even then I didn't really emote much. I got home yesterday and saw this photo of Tyrese, and that's when the tears started to flow.

Original photo by Marcus Mulick

The moral of the story here is to never, ever be afraid to own how you feel. I'm surprised by the depth and range of emotions I've felt this weekend over the passing of someone I've never met, but not at all regretful about it. I see a lot of intrinsic values and traits Paul Walker possessed that I really resonate with, and I know that's why I'm feeling the way I am. I know my mom is grieving too, and how she feels is obviously of utmost importance to me. I'm grateful we had the time we did with him on this planet, and know the Universe has gained an amazing soul who did great things for others while he could.

Aces Interview: Lee Smith & Kristen Puckhaber, Rich Kids Brand & Urbanity

I was originally going to post this yesterday, but what better way to kick off Small Business Saturday than with two of my favorite small business owners?

With Mikey McClarron, the reason why Lee & Kristen happened :)

I met Kristen way back when she was co-captain of Western Washington University's hip-hop dance team. I was always in awe of her amazing dancing and impeccably flawless streetwear-laced style. Sassy, smart and always sweet-natured, it's no surprise Kristen now leads the creative vision driving the burgeoning Seattle-based Rich Kids Brand.

Lee is the other half of this stylish power couple and creator behind both Rich Kids Brand and Urbanity Shop. With Lee's leadership, both the brand and shop are flourishing, garnering national attention while staying true to their respective vision. I have always resonated with Rich Kids' motto ("Rich isn't what you have, it's who you have beside you.") Lee is a such a bright entrepreneurial talent that I have a feeling we've only seen the tip of the iceberg with his ventures.

At Agenda

What's on your playlist right now?

Lee:

My playlist right now and pretty much all year around features Lil Wayne (All Mixtapes) with No Ceilings always being at the top, Pusha T, The Weekend, some turn up hood ish and blurbs of Pucks 80's butt rock.

Kristen:

My current playlist consists of whatever Lee has in the car and my pandora stations combined, which turns out to be kind of all over the place...

  • Jay Z

  • Meek Mill

  • Mya

  • The Postal Service

  • Kendrick Lamar

  • Kanye

  • Prince

  • Lil Wayne

  • Modest Mouse

  • Janet Jackson

  • The Weeknd

  • The Beatles

Describe your style.

Lee:

My style has always been inspired by street culture and high end designers. I love what street and urban style represents, but you can't beat the fit of Saint Laurent or Balmain. You'll always see me in some exclusive Jordan's (og color-ways of course), Balmain Bikers or Japanese Denim, and I'm really feeling these PRSVR napa leather joggers that we just got into the shop. (We brought the leather joggers to Fendi 6 yrs ago) lol. I usually top it off with one of the authentic custom snakeskin hats we did and of course a Rich Kids tee or hoodie. I like to keep it exclusive, but always have some wow pieces that people are familiar with.

Kristen:

I've never really had to answer this before, so it's weird because I feel like there could be a wrong answer...which there isn't one; since I grew up in the (hip hop) dance world, that has definitely influenced my “contemporary street” style. I dress comfortably, but like to have a little bit of that unique aspect to my wardrobe. I've always been a “thrifter,” I remember going in cliques to the local Value Village in junior high and finding those gem and at the time (late 90's), I didn't know how stylish we were.

Who inspires you?

Lee:

Honestly my parents have always inspired me and pushed me to be who I want to be. Their support is amazing and I couldn't ask for more. I also get inspired by anyone who lives to push the limits and make their dreams a reality. Style wise of course the Pharrell's and Kanye's of the world, but in terms of business, people like Elon Musk and Richard Branson are people who consistently inspire me to keep on pushing even when things get tough.

Kristen:

My parents; who are still (happily) married and who are working because they love what they do, not because they have to. My dad builds guitars now [after retiring in '97 as a Major in the Air Force, then after retiring from teaching high school Japanese this past year], and my mom is now an elementary school teacher [after spending time in the Air Force as well and raising my brother and I]. She is also in the midst of getting another teaching certification because she set it is as a goal (not because she has to). That inspires me.

I have been really fortunate to have had family members, friends, peers, etc. around me my whole life that I have always found inspiration in. I think people with creative minds can always find inspiration in even the smallest things. And it goes without saying that Lee inspires me; we constantly challenge each other and the end result is usually something amazing.

What are you reading?

Lee:

I'm not a huge reader because I have the attention span of a two yearr old, but I love to watch videos. I watch a lot of videos on the above mentioned people that inspire me and I like to catch up on articles/interviews of the movers and shakers of the world. I'm am heavy into blogs like: Upscalehype, celebritynetworth, and Forbes.

Kristen:

I wish I had an answer that would make me sound super refined and cultured, but as of lately, any reading I have been doing consists of Buzzfeed and magazine articles. I have a “to read” book section awaiting me at home, that consists of “The Female Brain” (Louann Brizendine), “Kingdom of Fear” (Hunter S. Thompson), and “Proof of Heaven” (Dr. Eben Alexander), to name a few.

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

Lee:

I'm excited of course about the new Urbanity I just opened up in Bellevue Square, all the dope projects I have going on with Rich Kids and the launch of my new tech company. I'm pretty much excited for everything coming up because it's all companies I have started and that I truly believe in. We also have some dope collaborations and releases coming up that everyone will hear about shortly.

Kristen:

Since the new Urbanity just opened, I'm really excited to see not only the store grow, but what the response to the womens side of the store is directly. I always admit that I do not live and breath fashion, but I do love retail and I love learning trends/brands and implementing them into my day to day (work) life.

I always get excited for upcoming trade shows and it is really interesting going as a buyer and as a vendor, so with future of Rich Kids, I am especially excited to represent at the next upcoming Agenda shows in Long Beach and Las Vegas and see what opportunities arise. We have been working really hard to expand and every day brings something new and different.

The new Urbanity in Bellevue Square!

Thank you!

Fresh Style: Thankfulness & Wool Sweatpants

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Every day I'm thankful for your support and readership, as well as for the love and light from my family and nearest + dearest friends. Deuce, the lost bulldog in Seattle and the survivors of typhoon Haiyan are still on my mind every waking moment as well. I wish a safe homecoming for Deuce, and peace for those in the affected typhoon areas. My heart is with you on this Thanksgiving day.

Had a fun conversation on Twitter yesterday when I tweeted "Trying to decide which fancy sweatpants to wear tomorrow." Thanks to current fashion trends and my undying love for Nike and other sportswear, I found I'd actually procured a few pairs of fancy sweatpants this year of the leather, harem, ruched, bamboo fabric and other variety. I met the beautiful L.A.-based designer Piper Gore through a mutual friend, and Piper was kind enough to gift me with one of her favorite winter essentials - the wool Too Cool sweatpants from her A/W '13 collection.

Piper Gore Wool Sweatpants

These beauties are basket-weave wool with leather trim and satin lining. The cream and tan juxtapose well with all of the olive and brown tones that take up a good part of my closet. This Zara sweater is in regular rotation, while the Nike SB beanie is my latest procurement for my never-ending beanie collection. It's cold, alright?!

Nike Sky Hi Dunk Premium

The Nike Sky-Hi Dunk Premium is the crown jewel of my sneaker collection at the moment. A trip to Portland for some shopping at the Nike employee store coincided with the release of Nike's holiday guide, Give the Gift of Sport. After writing about these then spotting them in the flesh, I knew they had to be mine. Waterproof toebox upper with olive suede and orange socks? Have a seat, regular Dunk wedges!

Thanksgiving Style with Jaleh Clothing

Turkey day has finally come y'all. Every year, after I'm done helping out in the kitchen, I sit in my room and stare at my closet like the "perfect" outfit is going to appear. Looking cute on Thanksgiving has never been a priority of mine, but this year I figured maybe I could switch it up and grub in style.

One of my favorite local womenswear lines, Jaleh Clothing, let me pull some gorgeous pieces from their collection to make a few different Thanksgiving Day outfits. One of my Aces, (see what I did there Jess!) Rosie and I brainstormed a few outfits we thought were perfect to wear to dinner tonight. Before you decide on sweatpants, an old shirt, and throwing your hair in a bun, consider these ideas:

1. Comfy Comfy Comfy: For the girl who just wants to eat whatever she wants and not feel constricted by the pants she wears.

Bonus: the jacket hides the belly!

(Pictured: Lily Crossover JacketElla Leggings, Nordstrom BP T-Shirt, Steve Madden Boots)

2. Casual: For the girl who wants to look extra good while eating good.

Observation: Scarves prevent stains or catch crumbs...hey, snack for later!

(Pictured: Della Bows TopElla Leggings, Nordstrom Rack Scarf, Rag & Bone Booties)

3. Dressy: The name says it all. This outfit is for the girl who takes dinner outfits seriously, wants to work it from beginning till the end and doesn't care how cold it is outside.

Thought: Skirts give the tummy a little breathing room too, so eat up!

(Pictured: Jacki Draped Top, H&M Leather Skirt, F21 Shoes & Necklace, Pitaya Belt)

My personal favorite is the casual outfit, which one would you wear? A huge thanks goes out to to Jaleh and Rosie for helping me out. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

**If any of the Jaleh pieces caught your eye, they're having a huge Black Friday sale!

Aces Interview: Frank Guanco

While all of my Aces are people I admire in one way or another, sometimes they also feel like family. Today's Ace is just that. Meet Frank Guanco!

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

Frank and I worked together at Niketown Seattle, during what could arguably be considered its golden era (when the store opened until whenever it was that I left LOL.) There were so many stylish, hilarious and smart people working together in one retail space, it truly felt like a second home. I know for sure NTS is where I met most of my friends during college. I spent more time at the Swoosh than on extracurricular activities on campus for sure.

Anyway, Frank and I were on the visual merchandising team, and naturally our mad skillz in impeccable t-shirt folds, steaming, wall sets and mannequin outfits have served us well post-Swoosh. I considered Frank and the other guys on my team big brothers. I learned a lot about fashion from a guy's perspective, and from Frank in particular, how raw denim is superior to every other bottom that exists on planet Earth. More on that later.

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

LULZ. At one of the infamous FB soirees, back when FB only meant "Frank's Birthday"

Post-Nike, Frank and I don't see each other quite as often but have kept in touch more than with other NTS friends. We've both "come up" in the blogosphere and the Seattle social media community, sharing advice and tips whenever we can meet at Il Corvo for the best pasta lunch ever in life. I adore Sarah, Frank's longtime girlfriend, and knowing they are out there dodging the "When ya gonna get married?" question while preserving a solid, low-profile relationship, I stay inspired in my own, equally-long relationship with Jacob. Also I remember when Frank was still trying to convince Sarah to date him and that's one of my favorite memories to tell mutual friends.

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

Probably what I admire most about and share with Frank is a voracious appetite for culture. When we want to learn something, we LEARN IT. Learn more about Frank now:

What's on your playlist right now?

I'm a bit eclectic in what I listen to. Right now, I'm listening to a lot of podcasts (Nerdist, Marc Maron, Bill Simmons, Wine without Worry by Jameson Fink) and anticipating Christmas music. Because Christmas music is rad. Holla to Warm 106.9 this holiday season. Here are the last few albums I've recently bought:

  • John Legend's Love in the Future

  • John Mayer's Paradise Valley

  • Keith Urban's Fuze

  • Arcade Fire's Reflektor

  • Pearl Jam's Lightning Bolt

  • Kelly Clarkson's Wrapped in Red

  • Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream.

Feel free to throw shade, snobs.

Describe your style.

In a word, evolving. I tend to go casual (jeans, tees, and a hoody), but as I get older and care more about what I'm wearing, I've become more cognizant of construction, detail, quality, and what I think is representative of my brand. A typical look would be a wool sport coat, graphic tee, raw selvedge denim, and Lunar Flyknit Chukkas. I love raw denim and the process of wear that jeans go through. And I'm in that weird sub-group of denim nerds that rarely wash their jeans. Again, feel free to throw shade. But I enjoy little details and embellishments; funky Nikes, pops of color, a nice pocket square or tie, a pattern that is vibrant; anything that is a bit skewed to what I think is cool.

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

Who inspires you?

To begin with, my mom. She's amazing. A hurricane of relentless and caring. I'm continually amazed by her. I'm also inspired by those that I'm close to and what drives them. How their uniqueness as to what they strive for is very inspiring. I love that I've been fortunate to be around people that are driven to get theirs. It's awesome.

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

What are you reading?

Have two books that I'm going through at the moment: David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell (interesting how haters are starting to surface about him when he created an entire movement of writers that have taken his style); The Loved Dog Method by Tamar Geller (because I'm always looking at more ways to connect and train my dog; she's a bit of a handful). Here's what is on deck; The Juice by Jay McInerney (he wrote Bright Lights, Big City and is probably the best wine writer in the world); The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer (can't wait to tackle this one).

I also love food and go through cookbooks like Marshawn Lynch goes through suckas. I love reading cookbooks for inspiration and to understand what goes into a chef, restaurant, style, region, whatever; here are my recent cookbooks; Scarpetta by Scott Conant, Le Pigeon by Gabriel Rucker, The Food of Vietnam by Luke Nguyen, Toro Bravo by John Gorham, and the Pitt Cue Co. Cookbook.

Frank Guanco

Frank Guanco

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

Everything. I'm excited for Christmas. I'm excited to get back on my game with wine. I'm excited for some upcoming trips; Napa Valley to cover Flavor Napa Valley. Napa and Sonoma for Thanksgiving. San Francisco to revisit State Bird Provisions. I'm excited to get back to writing and pick up some ideas that have been bouncing around in my head for sometime; the Unicorn of South Lake Union, Run for Croissants, Pho Week 2.0, my recent juice cleanse, and to maybe, finally, start writing my lifestyle blog.

I'm also excited to watch my puppy grow up. To see her evolve and become the dog she can be.

Finally, I'm excited to see what's in store. For all of us. Let's get it.

Thank you!

Fresh Style: Old West/Coast w/ Ariat's Saratoga Boot

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Ariat.

I've always wanted a good pair of cowboy boots, but the perfect pair has always eluded me. How to incorporate such an iconic style into my normally urban style? Enter Ariat.

This classic American footwear brand has roots deep in the equestrian culture. Like the sport, Ariat boots and apparel are driven by world-class design, innovation and technology. The brand was kind enough to gift me the Saratoga boot in Old West Black, and to my surprise, these fit seamlessly in my footwear rotation.

Western boots are fun because they’ve got that distinct stitch print and Old West flair that make them a statement unto themselves. I thought about pairing them with a silk sheath dress, romper, or maybe even some cutoff shorts and tights. But hi it’s freezing, and the most natural thing to come out of my closet were layers on layers of my tried & true Pacific Northwest street style. Throw a beanie on top and a hemp milk latte in my hand, and voila! Pretty much my every day outfit before your very eyes.

The Saratoga boot is amazingly comfy and sturdy; an easy choice for all-day wear. I went a half-size up and recommend you do the same! Take a look at all the different boot styles at

Aces Interview: Kate Franco

In this wonderful world of blogging, I am both a contributor and a reader. Today's Aces interview features one of my favorite bloggers to follow. Meet Kate Franco of Undeniable Style!

Fashion bloggers are a dime a dozen these days, and there's a small handful I keep up with regularly. They each have a distinct style that's all there own, making them standouts in a sea of the same same (see "Do you dress like a 'blogger'?" on IFB.) Kate is definitely on that short list, always coming strong with a savvy edge to that bohemian California style. Every time she's got a new outfit up, I'm like, "YES, GIRL" and wondering where she scored each piece. Most likely, some of those pieces came from Poshmark, where Kate is one part of a wonderful assembly of human beings. Seriously, the Poshmark team is comprised of some of the sweetest, most stylish people in my universe and if I worked anywhere (not for myself), I'd want to be there.

Anywho, I consider Kate my style soul sista because she is always on point. Aside from her sartorialisms, I admire Kate's love of meditation, green smoothies and wellness. You can wear all the clothes in the world, but it's always what's inside that counts.

What's on your playlist right now?

Great question. I have to preface the answer by saying that I am terrible with music! You never want to play name that song/artist/album with me, I'll lose 9 times out of 10. So, I'm going to rely on Spotify to give you the true answer:

Alabama Shakes, Lana Del Ray, Kings of Leon, The Temper Trap & Massive Attack.

Also: John Mayer, Hot Bodies in Motion, Thievery Corporation & Mark Farina. I love Miley's Wrecking Ball. Sorry, can't help it!

My daily commute consists of country, some jazz, classic rock and '90s jams. And Oprah. Lots of Oprah. I'm all over the place. Gotta love satellite radio!

Describe your style.

Constantly evolving. (Thanks for the revolving closet, Poshmark!)

I think in the last couple of years it's settled somewhere between bohemian and edgy -- which I guess is pretty trendy right now, so that works.

I feel my best when I am comfortable. I like oversized, slouchy shapes, cool draping, piles of jewelry and lots of leather. Notorious for buying clothes that are a couple sizes too big for me. I'm going through a hat phase. And a minimalist phase in terms of colors; I'm drawn to neutral palettes lately.

Most importantly, I dress for me and no one else.

I secretly wish I could pull off the granny chic J. Crew kind of look!

Who inspires you?

I consider Gabrielle Bernstein my guru. She's been a huge part of the change in my life the last couple of years and is a constant source of inspiration. I am continually in awe of the passionate team I work with at Poshmark. My soul sisters keep me going, and I am blessed to be surrounded by driven and motivated ladies who are living out their entrepreneurial dreams. Lila & Abby, I'm looking at you!

What are you reading?

I LOVE reading! My grandparents were worried when I was young that I was going to be socially awkward because I always had my nose in a book. (Don't worry, I turned out okay.) Sadly, I don't have the time to pick up a physical book these days. I am currently doing the May Cause Miracles 40 day workbook.

Some books I've listened to recently via Audible:

Blogs & Websites I have bookmarked:

  • Tiny Buddha

  • IFB

  • Plus, a MAJOR twitter addiction. It's seriously my main news source.

Additional:

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

There's so much to be excited about! When you look at each day as a gift, your perspective changes.

Having never traveled abroad, I'm looking forward to upcoming international trips (St. Martin, Tokyo, Greece), celebrating milestones of dear friends, and majorly fun projects both at work and for the blog. Stay tuned!

Thank you!

Nike Running Seattle Lands in the University Village

In all of my years of blogging, I don't think I've ever been this excited to attend a media preview as I was last night for the Nike Running store in the University Village. Being a fitness fiend, former NikeTown visual merchandiser and Nike fan 4 Life, the stars aligned and my favorite brand on earth set its sights on Fresh Jess! I could barely hold my shh together all day yesterday in anticipation.

Nike Flash Pack
Nike Flash Pack

To prep us for the highlight of the evening - a 2.5ish mile run through out the University of Washington campus and University Village - Nike sent us the Flash Pack: the iconic Pegasus shoe in Pegasus+ 30 Shield and the waterproof, breathable and extremely reflective Shield Jacket. Seriously - the entire lower panel of the jacket and half the sleeves are purely reflective. Perfect for runs literally anywhere in Seattle, at any time.

HELLOOOO NIKE RUNNING! YOU'RE PRETTY!

Nike Running Seattle is the 15th of its kind in the country. Keeping true to the essence of the Northwest, much of the 6303s.f. store is made of recycled or reclaimed materials. Designed to optimize energy efficiency, is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and is anticipating LEED® Gold Certification. It reminds me a lot of what NikeTown looked like when it first opened - carefully edited merchandise intermixed with artifacts of Nike's rich history in running.

This store also includes beautiful black & white photography of popular trails in the area. I loved the #WeRunSeattle corner, complete with Run Club lockers and an interchangeable route map and board for upcoming runs and events.

Their Run Club meets every Wednesday night at 6:30p.m. in case you're interested in a group run!

There's a Nike Plus interactive experience holding court in the middle of the store where you can explore the Nike FuelBand and Sport Watch. Runners' services such as digital gait analysis are available, and ladies can receive specialty services such as pant hemming, custom bra fitting and styling.

The SE is a sweet update to the original model, now with the ability to start and stop sessions (so you can track a specific workout, other activity, and most importantly - SLEEP.) Aces Interview: Jeanine Pesce

The Create + Cultivate Portland event brought a lot of new badasses into my world. My two favorite speakers from the day were Emma McIlroy of Wildfang, and today's Aces interview, Jeanine Pesce.

It's refreshing to know Jeanine Pesce is somewhere out there being awesome. I can tell you right now that the answers you'll read below are so close to how I would answer these questions, it's scary. Kindred spirits indeed! She automatically became one of my favorites at C+C just because she and I were the only ones there wearing Nike FuelBands. I just don't come across sporty West Coast girls with a soft spot for dirty south hip-hop and an affinity for fashion and business to boot. Jeanine left the NYC fashion world for San Francisco and her own business. Range focuses on trend forecasting and daily inspiration for the active, sport and lifestyle markets. It's a perfect fusion of her love for outdoors with a keen sense for bringing the creative eye to sports and active lifestyle marketing. I think what she's doing is super rad and I hope you do too. Enjoy!

What's on your playlist right now?

I love gully rap music more than anything else in the world, I tend to stick to East Coast and Dirty South more than West Coast though. Sorry Pac.

  • Gucci Mane

  • Rick Ross

  • Waka Flocka

  • T.I.

  • Dipset

  • Weezy

  • Meek Mill

  • 2 Chainz

  • A$AP Rocky

  • Biggie

  • Big Pun

  • Three 6 Mafia

In addition to that, I've been pretty much been listening exclusively to records for the last few months, I have a pretty amazing collection of vinyl that I inherited from my parents that just found it's way out of storage and back into my life. It is an interesting mix of Motown, classic rock, movie soundtracks and instrumentals with a touch of '80s bangers. I would say my favorite of the bunch are:

  • Diana Ross

  • Marvin Gaye

  • Al Green

  • Stevie Wonder

  • Prince

  • David Bowie

  • Fleetwood Mac

  • Phil Collins

  • Hall & Oates

  • Neil Young

  • Tom Petty

  • Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd

  • Edith Piaf

Describe your style.

As I get older my style has changed dramatically. It also probably has something to do with the fact that I moved from NYC to California three years ago and have successfully shed most of my fashion-slave layers. If I had to try and nail it down I would describe it as "funky art-aunt goes to the mountain".

You know those ladies that are wearing something super swaggy, but it just looks like a sack? That is how I envision my future self.

I love tent dresses, tunics and rompers and I own more pairs of sport sandals, hiking boots and Birkentsocks than anyone you probably know in real life. I wear tons of performance apparel and natural fibers (like merino) because I am a huge nerd and I obsess over technical materials, plus I am usually outside either camping, hiking, running or getting ready for snow season, so I need clothing that functions and works with the body. I have not totally lost my taste for fashion though, so if I do buy a new piece, I try to make sure it is something timeless like Dries, or a simple basic from A.P.C. or Theory.

Who inspires you?

People that takes chances and strong, independent women. I grew up in a seriously hard-working household and I can only really relate to other people that have a similar work ethic. It is really a double-edge sword for me because I yearn for the freedom associated with being a dreamer, but my genetic makeup is firmly grounded in reality, so "taking a chance" and leaving my career to start my own business for example, wasn't something that came naturally (or easily) to me. I think that is probably why I spend so much time outside. Nature gives me the ability, both literally and figuratively, to get lost in the moment and experience guilt-less bliss. I truly admire the mothers of the world with full-time jobs that weren't willing to sacrifice their dreams of having children for a title and the entrepreneurs that have had the balls to carve out their own path or vision regardless of the outcome.

What are you reading?

Lately, I have been trying to do all my reading off-line, just to give my eyes a little rest from the glowing screen of my computer. I always read New York Times on Sundays with my fiance Cooper, it is a little bit of a tradition for us. We get a coffee and sit around the house passing the sections back and forth. There is something so nice about holding an actual, physical newspaper. Magazines that you will ALWAYS find on my coffee table are -> Kinfolk, Outside Magazine, Frame, Mark, The New Yorker, Sunset Magazine, The Surfers Journal and The Plant (Journal). My guilty pleasure is the Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin, I just can't get enough of it and I can always use a little escape from reality.

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

Growing my business and taking on new challenges, wild adventures that involve tents, boards and bikes, and marrying my best friend in front of all the people that I love in the spring.

Thank you Jeanine! Find her at This is Range and JeaninePesce.com.

The Art of More

[My Facebook status update yesterday]

It's funny how we can know so much about what to do and not do to be productive, and yet let ourselves get distracted to avoid actually doing them. The path to making things happen is so much easier said than done.

Between the Seattle Interactive Conference (recap and thoughts coming soon) and today's Creative Mornings Seattle talk, I've realized more than ever before that I need to keep myself around other creatives as much as possible. Working for yourself means you're by yourself a lot, and when I'm in the zone working, I need space and solitude to get things done. That's fine in moderation I guess, but I definitely let that become the norm and don't give myself enough time to just do.

Chase's talk today centered around "The Art of More" - of giving and sharing more of your work; of putting more of yourself out there. The abundance of will(ing): to share, to fail. It was the kickstart I needed to look at my blog anew again. Blogging is like working out; once you fall off the wagon, the battle is not just in getting back on that wagon, but getting a groove going again. The writing I do here is my creative outlet, and it gets put on the back burner way too much. I chose the freelance life so I could blog more. Chase's perspective was a great reminder to me that I need to get back at it.

He also talked about bravery in imperfection. I loved this point, because I let myself think that careful, edited blogging is better than blogging about things that give me life, no matter how often that might be. "I don't blog unless I have something meaningful to say." That became a crutch instead of a helpful perspective for me. Create something and just put it out there. Just write, Jess, and put it out there.

This morning's talk was so moving to me (obviously) and drove me home to absorb more at Chase Jarvis Live and Creative Live. Special thanks to my friend Imei, who interviewed Chase after the event and shared these clips with me:

Tonight I watched his Live episode with Mark Ecko, another current fascination of mine.

If you're interested in watching Chase's talk, it should be up on the Creative Mornings Seattle Vimeo channel soon. If you're in the city, you should definitely check out one of their events sometime for some serious inspiration! Follow them on Facebook.

I got a chance to have a Google hangout with the man behind RMP West, Manuel Rappard. He's been a denim enthusiast since the age of 12, when he first convinced his mom to buy him a pair of Diesel jeans. Since then, denim has been a passion of his. Manuel grew up in Germany, moved to Michigan, and then attended NYU. After school, he began working for Google, but is now pursuing his denim dreams. His main goal is to sell the best jeans in the simplest way possible.

RPM West started out as a Kickstarter campaign that got over $104,000 contributed to their project in 40 days. The growth was very organic, and spread via word-of-mouth and blogs. 36 hours after launching, they met their funding goal. They have currently fulfilled 1500 Kickstarter orders, and will be making the denim available to the public soon.

What makes RPM so unique is that they are introducing their Home Try-On Program. The Home Try-On Program will let you choose 3 denim styles or sizes, and you keep the one you like the most, and then send back the 2 you do not want free of charge.

RPM has decided to keep their denim at wholesale price so that the consumer can get the best price possible.  RPM West eventually wants to have a full product line in the next coming months.

30. Now.

It's been just over six months since I turned 30, and so far it's been the greatest ride. Most years, age is just a number, and for some of you, 30 might not have meant anything. For me, 30's been a period of so much growth and awareness in every aspect of my life. Life feels even more intentional than it was before - maybe because now I'm so quick to own my feelings, my opinions, my convictions. If there's an idea, thought or emotion strong enough for me to need to express it, I will. It never used to come so easily, but now I'll just lay it all out there!

It definitely hasn't been all rosy. I am grateful for all of the opportunities that have come my way, but I'd be lying if I said they just came to me by chance. I work hard and am always pushing myself to do more; to be more. I don't just want to blog for the sake of blogging, or do things a certain way because everyone else is doing it. I want all of the work I produce to be me, 100%. A lot of that ownership comes with truly being comfortable in my own skin, and understanding what 'being me' looks like. Then being okay with it, all the time.

I re-read The 4-Hour Work Week a couple of months ago, and the section on time management resonated with me really strongly. The tips he gave and the issues he pointed out that keep us from doing what we want added so much dimension to my perspective on how I manage my time (also known as my constant struggle.) One specific question he asked us to consider now sits on a Post-It inside my daily to-do notebook.

"Are you inventing things to distract you from what's important?"

I am the #1 offender of this, although I know it's common to have this problem. I focus so much on my tasks that the big projects - the meaty ideas that need to come to life, or the juicy brainstorming/creativity sessions that need to happen for me to take things next-level - those things sit forever on my list and never get done. I am also a die-hard for writing things down on my list, so much so it becomes detrimental to me actually doing anything about it. I see one thing juxtaposed against the 5 million other things I have to do, and all of a sudden I don't have any time for it. That's my struggle, and that's why this Danielle LaPorte truthbomb is a gentle reminder to me to do things now. Do it now. Don't wait until it's been sitting on your to-do list. It's something I work towards every day.

Concert Recap: Jojo & Leah Labelle

Ever been on Cloud 9 after a concert? My inner 13 year old just about died and went to heaven after I got to see Jojo and Leah Labelle live in concert last week. It has literally been a dream of mine to see Jojo perform and 10 long years later, it has finally come true. Jojo came to the Crocodile along with another soulful singer and a Seattle native herself, Leah Labelle.

Simply put, these ladies are crazy talented. Jojo is my girl. The one I grew up with, the one who sang songs that reflected how I felt in middle school and the one who sang about liking that boy, but not knowing what to do about that boy.

You know we all had that one artist who got "us" like that.

Quite frankly I could go on and on about how amazing the concert was. It was nothing but, good music and good vibes with good company. I can't wait till they come back to town again!

Mentionable Concert Moments:

- Jojo performed her infamous "Marvin's Room" remix to which she confessed, "I wrote this when I was hella hungover."

- Leah Labelle had a special and emotional moment on stage. She was finally performing in her hometown in front of family, friends and fans. I absolutely loved it.

Fall Style Guide with Courtney Liu

Seattle has seemed to skip over the crisp air that fall typically brings and jumped straight to the bone-chilling wintery weather—even though it’s still October…

This means one thing: breaking out the down jackets, boots, woven hats and knitted sweaters. In the past, I know I’ve been one to complain about how it’s impossible to look cute while still trying to maintain body warmth but after living in Seattle for nearly three years, I’m here to show you several ways to play it smart in cold yet still be stylish!

Turban Outfitted – Pair a turban with a black leather jacket like for an edgier look this season. The color of the turban model, Katy, is wearing is perfect for fall and was purchased from Urban Outfitters. It serves the same purpose of a beanie – keeping that head warm – but in a uniquely fashionable way.

No more North Face? – People in Seattle are known rock the North Face jackets to beat the rain but let’s be honest, it’s nearly impossible to look cute if you have to cover up your outfit with a black rain jacket. Take a look at stores like Ross or T.J. Maxx for designer jackets at really low prices! The Kenneth Cole rain jacket Katy is wearing, will surely keep you dry and I purchased it at Ross so you know that it didn’t break the bank!

Side note: Since rain jackets aren’t worn for warmth, pair your rain shielder with a knitted printed sweater underneath, to add pizzazz to your look.

Leopard Grunge – When is it really the right time to bring out the animal prints? This season, keep warm in an animal-printed (leopard, zebra or giraffe prints all work) jacket. Be bold and match your favorite animal print – mine is obvi leopard—with a colored jean and combat boots! Try a raspberry or plummy-colored jean since both shades are popular for fall.

Side note: If an animal-printed jacket is a little too much on the “wild” side for your taste, go for an animal-printed accessory such as the leopard beanie, which I’m pictured wearing (it’s from Free People) with a neutral-colored sweater and a chartreuse over-the-shoulder purse for that pop of color.

Faux Fur, Duh! – When you think of fur you probably think bougie, huh? But who says it has to be? I purchased this H&M faux fur vest for $12 at Crossroads…what a deal! You could either pair a faux fur vest with a long sleeved dress or as shown on Katy, with a simple knitted sweater and leggings. You’ll be sure to stay snug in this simple yet trendy get-up.

(Girly) Military Mayhem – There’s two looks if you enjoy the military look. You could go more literal with a camo jacket or you could go for the subtle military look with an olive green jacket and leather accents.

Camo jacket: Pair your camouflage-printed jacket with a ripped jean and a colored hat (see how raspberry color appears again in the beanie!). Since camo is usually a combination of neutral colors, it’s nice to throw a bright color into the ensemble. Side note: It’s cool to mix prints these days! Don’t be afraid to wear your camo jacket over a printed sweater like the one on Katy, which is tie-dyed. Olive green jacket with leather accents: Similarly when wearing this jacket, because the color is very neutral, try adding a colored hat (in this case, Katy is pictured wearing an ox blood-colored beanie). Also to keep with the rough look, wear a pair of black booties with buckles.

Cozy Chic – After a long day at work or school you just want to curl up in bed with a good book but instead of throwing on some sweatpants and a big T-shirt like you may usually do, try putting on a soft, pastel sweater; leggings and bright, fuzzy socks!
