Fresh Jess' Seahawks Style on Evening Magazine

Last week, Kim Holcomb of Evening Magazine asked me to style some of my Seahawks pieces in a segment that aired last night. It was the perfect intersection of some of my favorite things - the Seahawks, hometown pride and personal style. I've grown up watching KING 5 and Evening Magazine, and to actually be on it was surreal! I had a lot of fun showing my 12th Man pride in the days before the big game. Being a Seattle native, there's never been a time when the city has felt so connected, swelling with support for our team. We know we have an extremely special squad this season, and it's been absolutely magical - and yet strangely natural - to see them get to this point. Football in February is the sweetest Valentine yet!

"I'm just 'bout dat action, boss" :P

Thanks Kim & Evening Magazine for having me!

Fresh Jess in The Spoiled Life, YFE & Goodwill Glitter Gala

Just because I wasn't blogging this past holiday season doesn't mean I wasn't up to other things. I've had the honor of being a part of some really cool shows and sites recently and want to share what I've been up to!

In November, I volunteered to be in the Seattle Goodwill Glitter Gala's runway show. This year's theme for the show was "Through the Woods" a fairy tale depicting a metaphor for the journey overcoming adversity that many who go through Goodwill's programs experience. I was in the Dark Forest segment, where we depicted witches and wolves. To me, this was the perfect night to channel two of my favorite bad Bs - Bellatrix LeStrange from Harry Potter, and Beyonce. The amazing team at Salon Circa totally transformed me into a Filipina Bellatrix - which is a look I've been wanting to do for Halloween for years! Goodwill raised a record amount of fundraising that night, and I was so grateful to be a part of it.

In December, I joined the Young Female Entrepreneurs for their weekly Thursday live chat, talking about everything from consulting to content. It was thirty minutes that just flew by! I also may have shown off my cool outfit of sweatpants at the end :)

I was mad humbled when Emily of The Spoiled Life, an L.A.-based lifestyle site, reached out to me to do a LifeStyler interview for them. She came over and took these beautiful photos of my personal assistant Spike and I in our natural habitat/office.

Forever thankful for the love and support you've given Fresh Jess, so much that these doors have opened for me. I've got a couple more things lined up before the end of the month - stay tuned! :)

Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman is Awesome

One of the most interesting things about this year's Seattle Seahawks squad is that it's quite the band of misfits. Undrafted. Free agents. Young talents flying under the radar. All of them wanted a chance, and Uncle Pete (Carroll) and his staff gave them one. Our fullback, Derrick Coleman, is no different. His commercial for Duracell* reflects on his strength, will, and persistence in overcoming adversity. He's fought hard to get where he is, and now he's headed to the Super Bowl!

*I've only watched this commercial once. I was bawling and know for sure I'll do it every time I watch it again.

Since this commercial debuted a couple of weeks ago, Coleman's become a hero to so many out there who are deaf. One little girl in particular wrote him a letter thanking him for inspiring her and her twin. Dad tweeted the letter out to him, and Derrick (new to Twitter as of this week!) responded with a tweet & photo of his written letter response:

@Seahawks@DC2forlife you've inspired my little girls in a way I never could. THANK YOU! #Seahawks#SuperBowlXLVIIIpic.twitter.com/lhpJfCPOSD

Fresh Faced: Uplift the Eyes

With a new year comes a new fresher desire to edge up and spice up your look. Some ladies have lashes for days that they like to play up, or an angled bone structure they enjoy contouring. For me, I thought I'd play up my overall face. I'm nowhere close to being a professional on beauty and makeup, but here are some newfound techniques I thought I would share to the world. I am well versed in the get ready in 15-minutes type of routine and these steps are completely possible to create in that time slot.

What's key for me is to always wash my face if not twice than at least once a day, keep it moisturized and glowing. Having just stepped off the plane from tanning in Hawaii, the tan will eventually fade. So in order to rejuvenate that natural glow, I play off with concealer, bronzer, blush and my brows.

Concealing below my eyes goes a long way. This step can literally transform your entire face from looking drab and tired to positively awake! Top that off with an all-over bronzer to blend. Personally, I enjoy a nice bronzed glow and in some ways, helps by adding to that awakened effect. Blush, if used correctly can add another dynamic layer by giving you that dewey look. Bam!

As for brows, lining in my brows is a very new thing. It transforms the shape of my face while continuing to uplift my eyes. Finding the right shade is a whole other challenge. This is just my two cents on how I get to look presentable for the day.

Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman for Nike Flyknit Lunar2

Yesterday in Seattle was incredible. Our Seahawks secured the NFC Championship after an amazing game against the Niners, and are SUPER BOWL BOUND! The energy in this city was (and is still) electrifying. Everyone seems so happy. It's like Christmas all over again! I had a hard time going to bed, and woke up super early still on cloud nine from the game. Although I'm making solid efforts to not be on social media so much, I couldn't help myself from devouring all of my friends' updates and photos of their own 12th Man excitement.

Of course, the whole world seems to be focused on one post-game interview by one Richard Sherman. If you didn't know who he was before last night's game, you definitely do now. We in Seattle know and love our extremely intelligent, quick-witted and calculated cornerback. Rather than add another thinkpiece to the quickly overpopulated pool of opinion on the interview, I just want to kick off the road to the Super Bowl with his latest campaign for Nike. One of my favorite boys and my favorite brand? You know I gots to. RS joins Kobe Bryant and others for Nike's latest iteration of the Flyknit Lunar - the 2.

You can also peep behind the scenes at InsideNikeRunning's YouTube.

In case you couldn't feel it from the rest of this post, the next two weeks will be very Seahawks-heavy on this blog. If there's anything I've learned about the Seahawks, it's that the rest of the country outside of Seattle hates them for reasons they can't even explain. No one knows how amazing this team is outside of our wonderful city - so I'm going to help make it easy for you to see exactly what we see in the days before the Super Bowl.

Aces Interview: Chanelle Laurence

Fashion blogging is so. freaking. BORING lately. Somewhere along the line, fashion bloggers all started to look and dress the same - and where's the fun in that? The industry may have jumped the shark, but it only makes the ones who go against the grain stand out even more. I adore following a lot of L.A. fashion bloggers for this reason - no matter what, they are always reppin' that perfect California style. One of my favorites is Chanelle Laurence of The Penelope Times. She's got a distinct style that's all her own, and I love it. I'm also a fan of her store, Penelope's Vintage, and had the pleasure of blogging alongside her at WWDMAGIC in August. She's bold, sassy, laid-back and one of the nicest bloggers I've ever met. Real recognize real and I'm happy to know her. Meet Chanelle:

Aces Interview: Tac Anderson

Twitter was a different world back in 2009. It hadn't reached its tipping point yet, and it felt like a small, manageable community. I found myself making tons of friends and admiring not-yet-friends in many circles - Seattle, blogging, social media, fashion blogging, fashion, hip-hop music, MMA/UFC. You could tweet at anyone and would likely get a response, because we were all trying to figure out what the hell all of this social media hype was and how it'd fit into our lives. Those glory days are gone, but I'm thankful to have people like Tac Anderson still active and awesome in my Twittersphere.

Tac Anderson

Tac Anderson

I think I first learned about Tac through my dear friend and his former colleague, Jordana Bruner. I can't remember if I'd met Tac in real life before, but we did for sure very recently at a local marketing event. I've been following Tac's tweets, Instagrams and blog posts for years, from his own adventures navigating PR and social media in Seattle, then out in London, then back again. Though organization and productivity are never-ending lessons for me, I am a big fan of Tac's Getting Things Done (GTD, as in the David Allen productivity system) Moleskine hack and revisit it often when my to-do list needs a serious shape-up. Tac's like a quiet force in social media nowadays, in that he doesn't post as much but everything he says is good stuff.

Tac Anderson

Tac Anderson

What's on your playlist right now?

  • Cumulus (new local Seattle band)

  • Phantogram

  • White Lies

  • Tokyo Police Club

  • Bloc Party

  • Pixies (always)

  • We Were Promised Jetpacks

Describe your style.

Monochromatic NW Geek meets London.

Really all I need is Doc Martens, 501s, a black (or gray) shirt with the occasional flat cap, scarf and/or cardigan.

I try and keep it simple and everything matches black and gray, especially more black and gray. I grew up in the NW but living in London for a year left its mark.

Tac Anderson

Tac Anderson

Who inspires you?

Everyone and no one. I don't have role models. I don't get inspired by people, but by actions. The everyday decisions to strive to make oneself better is what matters. The things people do, even ordinary people, are what I find inspiring.

Tac Anderson

Tac Anderson

What are you reading?

I love reading. I just launched a new blog, the Book Punk where I review cyberpunk and steampunk books. I also contribute book reviews to the I Hear of Sherlock blog. I just finished Nexus by Seattle author and technologist, Ramez Naam and The Will of the Dead written by steampunk author George Mann. But I'm also really excited about S, a new book by JJ Abrams, which is a book within a book.

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

2014. I think it's going to be an amazing year.

Just Do It: My Theme & Vision Boards for 2014

Hope you've had a happy holiday season! I had a very Merry Christmas, then was promptly taken down by the sick bug a couple of days later. Being in bed all day is driving me nuts, although I did watch our beloved Seahawks clinch the NFC West and home field advantage for the playoffs; tons of reading (I cleared out all the articles I saved in my Twitter favorites and Pocket!); and of course, writing in my journal. I can't sit still, even when I'm sick.

I finished Stratejoy's 2013 Holiday Council workshop, which has been incredibly helpful for me in framing my goals for the upcoming year (this was my second year doing it.) Instead of just writing down a list of resolutions I may or may not (who am I kidding - probably not) stick to, Molly has us determine a theme for our year. We think about all the things we want to be, and our goals are designed from there. WITH ACTION PLANS! I still have to work on my action plans for my goals, but I've settled on a theme and created vision boards I'm happy to stand behind.

So what's my theme for 2014? I wasn't going for anything too lofty - this year, for example, my theme was "Be responsible." That was simple enough for me to carry as a mantra throughout everything I took on this year. For 2014, the theme "Just do it" stood out to me above the rest of my ideas. Not just because of my forever love for Nike, but because I need to remind myself of this simple phrase constantly.

I am always piling way too much on my plate. My way of dealing with doing too much is to over-organize. I try to put everything on my to-do list, even when I know it shouldn't go on there (or it's already done and I just want to cross it off. Haha!) It's a coping mechanism that leads to an unnecessarily long list of shit I have to do, and when I look at it, I don't want to do any of it. So here we are. Just do it Jess. Be present in the moment, and act on it. Don't overthink, don't leave it for later when you "have more time to stew on it" (I am always saying that to myself), and especially don't delay any more on the things you want the most. It's not fancy, but it's exactly what I need to help me do all that I need to realize my dreams.

Whenever I make a vision board, I like to do it the old-school, offline way with old magazines, a pair of scissors and glue sticks. This is the third year I've done one (peep my 2013 and 2012 boards), and every year it amazes me how much the images/feelings/goals portrayed on my boards manifest themselves in my life that same year. I do one for my life/goals, and one for personal style. Both boards go up in my closet, so when I'm in there every morning, they're in my face as a daily reminder of what's most important to me. This year, my life board's got a lot of encouraging phrases and badass, entrepreneurial women juxtaposed with boho, ethereal vibes. Beyonce and my "Just do it" theme are front & center because duh - and I had to include a laughing, dancing Jennifer Lawrence in there too.

I was super humbled to be a part of Seattle Met's Style Resolutions roundup for 2014 alongside some of the city's flyest & most stylish. My resolution was "...to focus on pieces that make me come alive. Vintage, statement, embellished, updated basics, whatever – as long as it lights my fire." This was the inspiration behind this year's style board. Bonus points if you can spot the Nike FuelBand! :)

2014 will be an interesting year, as I'm heading into it in the midst of total transition in all aspects of my life. I welcome it with an open mind, open heart, and some serious fire.

Do you have any resolutions, themes, vision boards or other ways you like to kick off the new year? Would love to see them! Happy new year to you!

Getting Resolution Ready with SearsStyle #Shop #ThisIsStyle

*I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client. #ThisisStyle #cbias

Happy holidays! It’s been a whirlwind of family, friends, fun and feasting this season and now I’ve got New Year’s resolutions on the brain. I’ve partnered with Sears Style to bring you some tips on getting your resolutions off on the right foot – and how to get the fitness look for less. What better time than the new year to start fresh (or refresh) on healthy habits that’ll have you feeling and looking great?

Last year, I made it not just a resolution but a priority to eat and live better. It’s been a great year of conscious, healthy eating and working out, but I know I’ve got so much to learn and try in years to come. I’ve definitely done my fair share of indulging this holiday season and could use a good reset to start off the year, too.

If there’s one thing I have learned this year, it’s that if you fall off the health & fitness, you get back up and keep going. My 2014 health & fitness resolutions start with a good reset to keep me motivated for the rest of the year.

Day 1: Drink more water

I can always use a friendly reminder to drink more water. I do my best to tote my water bottle with me all day, and to keep it filled. I also like to put some extras into my water to make it that much better (and tastier) for me – lemon, lime, ginger and sea salt are some of my favorites.

Day 2: Set meal plans

If I don’t set a meal plan, there’s a high likelihood I won’t make the best (read: healthiest) choices for all of my meals. Try as I might, I will eat whatever is closest and sounds the yummiest when I’m at the point where I’m starving. Setting meal plans for the week always sets me on the right path, and also makes it easier to…

Day 3: Stock the fridge

…with healthy goodness! Lots of greens of all shades and types, as well as tons of veggies, almond and coconut milk, coconut water, kombucha and free-range organic eggs.

Day 4: Try a new trail

I love trying new sports and new things, but must admit I’m a creature of habit. When I want to run outside, it’s usually the same few trails in the city. Seattle is an awesome place with countless running trails in and just outside the city – with some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Day 5: Get some yoga in

Another thing I don’t do enough of is get some good breathing and stretching in, which is why I love getting in a good yoga session. Focusing on breathing right and letting yourself experience every pose is so soothing and restorative.

Day 6: Treat yo’self – to new workout clothes!

Say you haven’t worked out in awhile. There’s a point where most of the battle to workout is in your head. Just getting to the gym, or getting in the right mood can make or break your will to go break a sweat. After almost a week of building healthy habits back up, why not treat yourself to some new workout clothes? Pretty soon you’ll be looking and feeling like a million bucks ☺ Check out the SearsStyle Pinterest board for tips get the look for less:
